The Power of Grapefruit
We all understand the importance of eating a healthy diet, but sometimes we truly underestimate which foods are best for our bodies. Superfoods can have a lasting effect on our health and well being, and the grapefruit is one of them!
Grapefruit is the perfect healthy breakfast. Like many other citrus fruits, it’s an excellent source of Vitamin C, which boosts the immune system.
There are many different varieties of grapefruit. In recent years, the pink-fleshed grapefruit has become increasingly popular- almost more so than the white or yellow-fleshed. It is a little sweeter and contains more health benefits. The pink pigment indicates the presence of lycopene, which has been shown to help prevent prostate and other cancers. Like other citrus fruits, the grapefruit contains bioflavonoids— which are compounds that appear to increase the benefits of Vitamin C, which is also found in this fruit in excellent amounts.
The grapefruit is low on the glycemic index and low in calories, so it is an important fruit for those who choose to diet. Because grapefruit has the ability to alter the effect of certain prescription medications ( including blood pressure medications), people on medications of this nature should check with their physicians before they regularly consume the fruit as a part of their diet.

Grapefruit is delicious halved, lightly sprinkled with demerara sugar, or other raw sugar, and broiled for a short while. It also makes the perfect healthy breakfast. I always try to eat some of the white pith with my grapefruit because this is the part of the fruit that is extremely high in nutrients. Grapefruits (like all citrus) will contain more juice if they feel heavy in relation to their size.
